Paediatric Urology Consultation

Paediatric urology looks after conditions related to how children pass urine and how their urinary and genital systems develop. Some concerns are present from birth, while others appear as children grow. Many are common and manageable, and a specialist consultation helps families understand what is happening and what to do next.

Undescended Testes

Undescended testes are most often picked up during routine newborn checks or early GP visits — sometimes by a midwife, sometimes by a parent who notices the scrotum looks different on one side. Often the testicle can be felt sitting higher in the groin, and a careful examination helps determine whether it’s truly undescended or simply moving in and out of position.

If it hasn’t come down by around six months of age, it’s unlikely to do so on its own. Early review allows thoughtful planning to support healthy development and long-term outcomes.

Circumcision

Circumcision in childhood may be recommended for medical reasons — such as pathological phimosis, recurrent balanitis or scarring — or requested for cultural and personal considerations. Careful assessment ensures the indication is appropriate and that timing is considered thoughtfully.

When performed, the procedure is carried out with attention to surgical precision, haemostasis and cosmetic outcome, within an experienced paediatric setting.

Attention to Detail

Children are not small adults. Their anatomy, physiology and patterns of healing are distinct, and surgical care must reflect that. Every procedure is approached with age-specific technique, careful protection of kidney and organ function, and consideration of long-term growth and development. Precision matters — not only in the operating theatre, but in how outcomes support a child’s health well beyond the immediate recovery period.
