General FAQ
Got a question? We may have the answer right here!
Do you bulk bill?
Each practitioner at Baby Steps will set their own prices for consultations.
Medicare and Health Fund Provider rebates are available for some services. All immunisations are bulk billed.
What if I can’t get a car park?
In the unlikely event that Woolworths’ and Coles’ parking is full, there are various paid parking lots in the surrounds (including on Subiaco Square Rd).
Can I bring other children to my appointment?
Of course you can.
All children are welcome at Baby Steps. There are toys and books in our waiting room for children to play with, as well a mindfulness colouring station to pass the time. Our reception team are armed with stickers and fun distractions, and they’re even willing to help settle a crying baby.
The one exception to this policy is during circumcision clinics. At circumcision appointments we ask that any siblings or children other than the newborn having the procedure remain at home or in the care of trusted family or friends.
Where can I breastfeed?
Baby Steps is a breastfeeding friendly space.
All parents are invited to feed their babies in any part of the centre. There is a designated semi-private breastfeeding space attached to our waiting room, with a change table, nappy bins and hand washing station. For any mothers who prefer to breastfeed in private, we also have four separate breastfeeding rooms available. Just ask our reception to point them out for you.
Where can I change my baby’s nappy?
There are change tables in every bathroom, in the breastfeeding space of the waiting room, in our nurses station, education rooms and in all our consulting rooms. Please use the designated nappy bins to dispose of soiled nappies. There are wipes, nappy bags and nappies provided and you are welcome to use whatever you need.
Is there wheelchair access at Baby Steps?
Yes, there is a lift that takes all visitors and patients up to our level.
We also have disabled toilets available in our centre.
Are your doctors Paediatricians?
There are both General Practitioners and Paediatricians working at Baby Steps.
The General Practitioners at Baby Steps have been specially trained in early parenting and child development. They also collaborate with and consult the Paediatricians at Baby Steps and Perth Children’s Hospital.
Are your Paediatricians accepting patients?
There are two Paediatricians currently working at Baby Steps.
Dr Steve Bilkey has a long waitlist. Active Baby Steps patients (patients of the GPs who work from Baby Steps) with a current referral, will be placed on a priority waitlist and made aware when Dr Bilkey has any cancellations.
Dr Radhika James has a modest waitlist for which she is accepting new patients.
What do I do if my child is sick or has a fever?
If your child is unwell and coming in for this illness to see the GP, please call reception before entering the building.
They will explain where to go, so that we can protect the babies in our waiting room. You will head straight into a private room, where your practitioner will come to when they are ready.
What do I do if my child is sick but there are no available appointments with a GP?
If it is an emergency, go to the Perth Children’s Hospital Emergency Department.
If it is not an emergency, you will have to determine the urgency of your child’s illness. Speak with reception and together you can arrange an appointment as soon as there is a GP available.
