6 Week Baby Check in Perth: What to Expect

The 6 Week Baby Check is an important GP appointment for every newborn in Australia. At Baby Steps, this check includes a full examination of your baby’s development, feeding, sleep, skin, and growth — along with their first round of immunisations. You’ll also have time to talk through any concerns about your baby’s behaviour, weight gain, poo and vomiting, crying, or head shape. This is also your space to ask questions about what to expect next — and get evidence-based answers from a GP who specialises in newborn care.

Your Baby GP will help with

Immunisations

Breast and bottle feeding issues

Unsettled babies

New rashes or skin changes

Sleep strategies

Head position (for signs of plagiocephaly or torticollis)

Poos, vomit and other outputs

Baby weight gains

More than a box-tick

The 6 Week Baby GP Check is more than a box-tick for bub; it’s an opportunity to establish an ongoing relationship between doctor and parents and provide continuity of care for your family’s future health. It’s also a chance to ask all the questions that have been filling your mind for the last six weeks and get accurate answers from someone qualified to provide them (i.e. not the internet).

Questions you might want to ask

“How do I settle my baby?”
“Is this new behaviour normal?”
“Are they gaining enough weight?”
“What colour should their poo be?”

A safe space

No question is too out there and no concern is too small. GPs at Baby Steps are specially trained in reducing anxiety and instilling confidence in parents for the weeks and months to come. Based in Subiaco, Baby Steps offers newborn GP care in a calm, supportive environment for Perth families.
