Perth Developmental Paediatricians

Developmental Assessments are performed by Paediatricians and provide a thorough analysis and determination of child behaviour, cognition, communication, social interaction, motor and sensory abilities and adaptive skills. They test for and provide a formal diagnosis of autism, ADHD, and a host of other general delays, as well as determine a child’s eligibility for early intervention programs. Paediatricians can also prescribe required medications, monitor children’s progress and guide parents towards relevant medical or allied health therapies. A formal diagnosis is required for government financial assistance through the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS), and Developmental Assessments are currently the only means of providing a sign-off.

Early childhood intervention at Baby Steps

With young children, early intervention is often more helpful than early diagnosis, and while a Paediatrician diagnosis has a 2-year waitlist, other early intervention therapies do not. Baby Steps offers a Developmental Progress Consultation run by specially trained GPs, in which they can review the need and priority for a Developmental Assessment, either helping you move up the waitlist or referring to early intervention therapies that can help your child.

The Developmental Assessment Waitlist

Developmental Assessments require a GP referral to book this appointment with a Paediatrician. But the time between this first step and actually seeing the Paediatrician is currently at an all-time high across Australia. The average wait time as it stands is about 2 years, but there are other options for early intervention in the interim.
